Instead of getting fired from your job for trolling Facebook or posting pictures during the day, you can now use it to find a new career opportunity.
Facebook’s Social Jobs Partnership app, which officially launched Wednesday, has an impressive 1.7 million job listings. But the jury’s still out on whether those listings can actually be sorted in a way that makes them helpful and relevant for job seekers.
The new job-search engine was created to tap into the growing trend of talent acquisition through social media, Facebook said in a release. The company teamed up with the U.S. Department of Labor and five other job-listing services to help users access a wide variety of jobs throughout the country and abroad. Jobseekers can search for a posting based on industry, location and keywords, and there’s even a special filter for veteran-friendly job posts.
Here’s what happened when I gave the app a try:
For each of those listings, you can read a brief description, send it to a friend or “like” it. After reading the brief summary, you can also click on another link that takes you to an application page.
But it appears Facebook hasn’t ironed out all of the kinks. There wasn’t a single job in my search from BranchOut that was within 20 miles of Washington, D.C. In fact, most of them were overseas, in the United Kingdom or in somewhere else in Europe. Since I’m not planning to move across the world, that wasn’t much help.
The US.jobs suggestions were more accurate; all but one posting was located in Washington, D.C.
The app doesn’t have a feature that lets you know whether any of your friends work at companies with openings, which is one of the benefits of LinkedIn and BranchOut; they help you leverage your network. Maybe Facebook will add that option in the future?
A recent Pew Research study found that some 60 percent of adults use social media. So Facebook should have no problem attracting some of the 12.3 million unemployed individuals — not to mention those of us who have a job but want a better one — to utilize their new app. If it’s a success, social media could play an even more significant role in the job search.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Social Jobs Partnership app’s Facebook page had more than 50,000 “likes.”
